# What does Expected Range mean on a Recurrent Report?

## Expected Range is our estimate of how far a vehicle can actually travel on a full charge in real-world driving — not the EPA figure, and not the number on the car’s dashboard.

**Why it can differ from the EPA range.** EPA range comes from a controlled lab test. Real driving — highway speeds, climate, everyday use — usually looks different. For many non-Tesla EVs, our Expected Range meets or beats the EPA number, especially on newer cars. When it does, you’ll see an “Exceeds EPA” badge on the report. That’s a good sign: the car is delivering on what it promised when new.

**Why a used Tesla may look lower than its dashboard.** For Teslas, Expected Range is usually lower than the dashboard number — around 80–85% of dashboard range on older model years, closer to 90% on newer ones. This isn’t a red flag. Tesla’s dashboard uses a fixed efficiency assumption that has historically run optimistic. Our number is based on real data from tens of thousands of Tesla drivers and reflects what those cars actually deliver.

**How climate factors in.** Expected Range is calculated using the climate of the dealership’s ZIP code. If you live somewhere much colder or hotter, your range may differ. The temperature chart on the report shows how range shifts across the seasons so you can adjust for where you live.

**Range in 3 years.** The report also projects range three years out, based on typical battery aging for that make, model, and year. Every lithium-ion battery loses a little capacity over time — this helps you picture the car a few years into ownership, not just on day one.
