How does Recurrent protect my information?

This page summarizes the steps that Recurrent and our API partner, Smartcar, use to ensure that your information is safe.

Sometimes we get questions about the security and protection of your personal data once you sign up for Vehicle Insights with Recurrent.

First off, Recurrent does not store your vehicle credentials. Recurrent establishes a connection to your vehicle through the industry's most trusted API administrator, Smartcar. Smartcar creates secure tokens to grant access to the vehicle data that Recurrent needs to create your Vehicle Insights, like odometer, battery state of charge, current range estimate, and whether or not you are currently charging.

Unlike many third party apps, Smartcar is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, and regularly gets external security audits to make sure we're as secure as possible. You can take a look at their data security policy here.

Recurrent does store your email address, the vehicle identification number (VIN), the ZIP code you entered when registering, and anonymized battery information from your car. You can read more about how data is used to create Vehicle Insights here.

Recurrent also uses information security (infosec) best practices to ensure our systems and data are secure. In the unlikely event that Recurrent's security is compromised, hackers would need to find the Smartcar tokens for each vehicle and the decryption key that we use to prove that Recurrent is the one requesting the data.
