# What does the Range tab mean?

## Range Insights

Range modules display various ways that we (and your car) calculate range.

The **"My Expected Range"** module is a reflection of your vehicle's onboard range estimator. This can vary significantly from real-world performance.

The **"Original EPA Range"** module is the range number that the manufacturer registered with the EPA for your vehicle's make, model, and trim. Unless otherwise specified, we use the default wheel/tire size for that vehicle configuration when displaying this EPA rating.

The **"Est. Range in 3 Years"** module shows a prediction of your vehicle's one-way expected real-world range on a full charge after three years of degradation (from today's date). This is based on real-world observed performance from our fleet of connected vehicles — not your dashboard display or EPA rating.

The **"Real-World"** Range module displays what Recurrent expects should be the achievable range for your vehicle – not the dashboard-estimated range, and not the EPA range – but how far you can drive one-way from 100% to 0%.

**How Real-World Range is calculated:**

Real-World Range figures reflect the 80th percentile of real-world observed driving performance. In practical terms: if you drive efficiently — no heavy towing, moderate speeds, reasonable weather — this is the range you can expect to achieve on a full charge. All vehicles experience some range variation based on conditions, and the seasonal chart shows how your Expected Range shifts across the temperature spectrum. Our range projections are built from data collected across thousands of real-world drivers in similar vehicle groupings. This means we currently have no direct knowledge of individual modifications such as aftermarket tires, battery upgrades, or specific road conditions — but our estimates reflect the range a typical, efficient driver can expect under those temperature conditions.

**A note on Tesla vehicles**

Tesla's Expected Range values in Recurrent may be noticeably lower than the range shown on your Tesla dashboard. This is expected – but why?

Tesla's dashboard range is calculated using a fixed efficiency assumption that doesn't fully reflect real-world driving conditions. After collecting data from thousands of Tesla drivers, Recurrent has found that Teslas consistently achieve lower range in practice than the dashboard suggests — typically around 80–85% of the dashboard figure for older model years, and closer to 90% for more recent models where Tesla has already adjusted its advertised range downward.

Our Real-World Range modules reflect what Tesla drivers _actually experience_ on the road. The car hasn't gotten worse — our estimate is simply more accurate than the dashboard figure.

Unlike the Tesla dashboard, Recurrent's Real-World Range estimates **do** vary with temperature. The seasonal range chart shows you the realistic range impact of hot and cold weather for your specific Tesla.
