Here are the takeaways for dealers and remarketers. 1️⃣ The anti-Elon response was strong but short-lived Dealers across the country got a 2-3 week surge of Tesla owners wanting to sell because of the politics... but follow-through was limited. One dealer told me: “We definitely had a surge of people come in to sell their Teslas, but most of them were so far underwater on their loans that they couldn’t realistically afford to get out of them.” Another said that someone looking for an affordable used EV “doesn’t care what Elon says or does. They just need a low-cost, reliable vehicle.” Regardless of what your politics are, that’s often a used Tesla, which currently make up almost 40% of all used EVs priced under $25K. 2️⃣ Tariff and rebate fear-based tactics don’t work Nearly all the dealers I talked to last week — both franchise and independent — avoid the subject of tariffs and EV rebate repeals because they are complicated and scary. Car shoppers are not looking for a crash course in economics. One dealer told me: “Honestly, we don’t know if prices will shoot up in Q4 prior to the rebate removal date or dealers will slash prices to get out of all EVs before Dec 31 — all we can say to our customers is that it could be chaotic.” 3️⃣ The most successful EV sellers are focused on transparency and education EV shopping can be overwhelming for first-time buyers because they don’t know the questions to ask. Successful sales teams use their own expertise and third-party resources (like Recurrent!) to lead the conversation. One GM shared a recent teachable moment about charging: “I explain that you’re never really charging from zero. Most of the time, you drive 20 or 30 miles a day and you can just plug in at home and it will be full by morning. All the stats that are out there about charging from 20-80% at home aren’t useful.” These types of tips may sound simple, but they establish credibility and can completely change a new owner’s experience with their EV — no learning lessons the hard way. Those are my highlights from my conversations with some of the nation's highest volume EV dealers. Met lots of great folks, but the "EV nerd" dinner that Recurrent co-hosted with Plug was the absolute best. So much laughter (and in between, actual business). Wood Michael Wheatley Terence Rasmussen (with Scott Case behind the camera!), Gas cars are disappearing, and this data from Recurrent shows it's happening before most people realize. There’ll be fewer gas-powered cars on the road in California next year than this year. And every year after that. In Colorado and Washington State, that tipping point occurs in 2026. It turns out that when a state hits 30% new EV sales, that’s the tipping point for the number of gas cars on the road falling. It’s a little counterintuitive that it’s not 50% when that happens -- almost like one of those trick logic problems on the SATs, so here’s how the math works... As a nation, we have almost 300M cars on the road in operation today. Each year, there are 16M new cars sold, while 12M leave the road permanently (accidents, junked, etc). Since the vast majority of the cars permanently exiting operation are gas-powered, we actually only have to get to 4M new EV + plugin hybrid sales per year nationally before the number of gas cars begins to decline. Nationwide, that’ll happen as early as 2029. But on a state by state basis, “peak gas car” happens much earlier. The implications to this hidden trend are wild. Revenue from gasoline sales and oil changes will begin their final decline in several states in the next year or two. In my house, we like to bet batches of chocolate chip cookies.
