Here are six important things to check when shopping for a used EV:
Expected range
The range of an electric car changes slightly with age, a process called battery degradation. Shoppers should be aware of this and make a purchase with reasonable expectations of the car’s current max range.
Charge Rate
Before you get to the dealership, ask them not to charge the EV past 80%. After your test drive, check its charging rate, which slows down significantly past 80% on a DC fast charger.
Vehicle history
Get a vehicle history report, which is standard for any used car purchase, including EVs. Look for red flags such as salvage titles and ensure recalls have been addressed.
EV-specific Features
- Check for vehicle-to-load (V2X) mode.
- Test all USB ports.
- Try different driving modes and their performance.
- Test remote parking assist features.
- Check the intensity of regenerative braking.
Maintenance and service history
While electric vehicles have lower maintenance needs than gas cars, ensure the car has been properly maintained. Consistent maintenance records indicate a well-cared-for vehicle.
Warranty coverage
Electric vehicles typically come with a basic vehicle warranty and a high-voltage battery warranty. Ensure you understand the terms and whether it's transferable to a new owner.
Finally...
Don’t be afraid to buy used electric cars. Battery failure is very rare, and these cars often last longer than expected. Doing your homework will help you make a sound purchase.
